Jurgen Klopp had chosen to rotate the line-up twice at 30 and 60 minutes, a choice confirmed before kick-off.
This was a chance for Manchester United fans to watch their new manager Erik ten Hag leading the team for his first game.
Liverpool finished the season 34 points ahead of Man United and started this game off brightly.
In the 3rd minute of the game, Mabaya linked up well with Harvey Elliot, and Mabaya crossed the ball into the path of debutant Carvalho but Man U goalkeeper De Gea got to the ball first.
A dangerous Man U attack finds themselves 2-on-2 with Liverpool's defense, but it was young midfielder Tyler Morton who dispossessed the ball from Fred in the 6th minute.
De Gea made another good save in the 8th minute as new signing Fabio Carvalho attempted to outsmart him whilst trying to flick the ball past the United Keeper.
The Spanish goalkeeper was at it again in the 10th minute as he made a diving save from a shot from Luis Diaz. The Columbian winger threatened the defense with a good run with the ball and cut inside from the left-wing as he attempted a threatening finesse shot.
The Mancunians were soon threatening Liverpool's defense again. Marcus Rashford missed a great opportunity four minutes after Sancho's goal. Rashford struck the ball off target following a dangerous Man U attack.
In the 17th minute, Liverpool had attempted something of a reply. Fabio Carvalho was looking like a threat once again as he hit the post after a counter-attacking move.
A minute later, Liverpool fail to score after something of a pinball machine moment in the box. Luis Diaz fires three shots in quick succession after rebound after rebound. He was very unlucky with his third shot, hitting the post.
Nathaniel Phillips struggled to reach the ball as it traveled over his shoulder whilst coming up against Jadon Sancho in the 23rd minute. The Man U winger got to the ball first, and he sent it into a dangerous area where Marcus Rashford is given a clear-cut chance, but unfortunately for him, the shot is blocked by Isaac Mabaya who made up for his previous mistake.
McTominay was given a decent chance to score in the 26th minute but his shot traveled straight into Allison's hands.
Liverpool still found themselves clumsy in defense and failed to clear the ball out of the final third. Fred made Liverpool pay as he chipped the ball over Allison's head to double their lead in the 30th minute.
Just two minutes after their second goal, Martial found himself one-on-one with the keeper in a tight space, he did well to finish and to make it 3-0.
In the 35th minute, Dalot hit the woodwork from a driven shot from a tight angle.
Joel Matip launched a long ball forward to James Milner who made an incredible first touch, he shot just outside the box with no other options around him. The predictable attempt to score was easily saved and anticipated by De Gea. Liverpool kept their spirits up after being shell-shocked by United's three-goal advantage.
Curtis Jones showed plenty of flair and energy in the 43rd minute after going on a great run with the ball, his shot was easily saved by De Gea at the end of such a great individual attack from the Liverpool native.
Half Time: Man U 3-0 Liverpool
2nd Half
Adrian was brought on to replace Allison at halftime and the most noticeable substitute by their opponents was their new left-back Malacia coming on to replace Luke Shaw.
Bobby Clark, a young striker, played with a lot of energy and looked adept at winning the ball back, he almost reached the ball from a dangerous cross out wide in the 53rd minute. If contact would have been made he would have probably scored his first goal for the Merseyside club.
In the 60th minute, Liverpool brought on Van Dijk, Robertson, Trent, Thiago, Keita, Fabinho, and Salah from the bench.
Liverpool immediately looked more comfortable playing it out from the back and they also increased their passing tempo. Darwin Nunez, the highly anticipated striker joined in too.
Trent Alexander Arnold played a long ball forward in the 65th minute towards the path of Nunez but De Gea came out to sweep the ball up and took hold of it just inside the box.
Since they made their last set of substitutes, Liverpool went on to dominate possession and totally changed the feel of the game, where Man United rarely saw the ball.
In the 70th minute, Nunez made his first attempt, and Tom Heaton who had just replaced De Gea due to a minor injury was forced to parry his shot from a tight angle after receiving the ball from Andy Robertson.
Pellistri made it 4-0 in the 76th minute after Man U made a dangerous counter-attacking move. This was their first real chance in the 2nd half.
Liverpool hit the woodwork yet again in the 87th minute after a finessed shot from Mo Salah.
